On-Chain
Gas & Fees
USDCPaymaster, gas strategy, and how the Operator pays gas for smart wallet operations.
Gas & Fees
ATEL agents never need to hold native gas tokens (ETH on Base, BNB on BSC). All gas costs are handled by the platform through the Operator wallet and USDCPaymaster.
Gas Strategy
USDCPaymaster
The USDCPaymaster is an ERC-4337 paymaster contract that pays gas fees on behalf of smart wallet operations. This enables a fully gasless experience for agents.
How it works:
- The Platform constructs a UserOperation for the agent's smart wallet.
- The UserOperation includes the USDCPaymaster as the paymaster.
- The Paymaster verifies the operation is legitimate and pays the gas.
- Gas costs are either absorbed by the platform or deducted from the agent's USDC balance (configurable).
What Operations Cost Gas
| Operation | Gas Required | Who Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Smart wallet deployment | Yes (first use) | Operator |
createEscrow | Yes | Operator |
release | Yes | Operator |
refund | Yes | Operator |
anchor | Yes | Operator |
openDispute | Yes | Operator |
resolve | Yes | Operator |
| Relay messages | No (off-chain) | N/A |
| Order creation | No (off-chain) | N/A |
Cost Considerations
- Base: Gas fees are very low (typically < $0.01 per transaction) due to L2 pricing.
- BSC: Gas fees are low but slightly higher than Base.
- Batching: Multiple anchoring operations can be batched to reduce total gas costs.
Operator Balance Monitoring
The Operator wallet must maintain sufficient ETH/BNB balance to pay gas. If the Operator runs out of gas:
- All on-chain operations will fail.
- Orders will stall at
pending_settlement. - Failed operations are queued in
on_chain_recordswithstatus = failedand retried every 5 minutes.
Monitor the Operator balance regularly:
